About Letterpress

Hints & Tips

Why We Love Letterpress

We started Whites with a handful of wedding invitation designs and sought a printing technique that would enhance their quality and add an extra special something to our work. We were impressed with the exquisite look and feel of the printing that could be achieved using letterpress and intrigued by its long and rich history. We had found our perfect printing partnership.

Letterpress was introduced as a printing technique during the first half of the 15th Century in Germany by Johannes Guntenberg, who invented the first independent movable type of printing. From there it quickly spread throughout Europe and was widely used up until the 1800's when rapid developments in a new and faster printing technique, lithography, overshadowed letterpress.

Today, in a world of digital technology, letterpress has become a much rarer method of printing due to the lengthy preparation process and skilled craftsmanship needed. However, it is enjoying something of a revival as a new generation of creatives, artists and craftspeople have rediscovered letterpress for printing beautifully crisp typography, patterns and graphics and so it lives on, in the main, for producing high quality invitations, personalised stationery and limited edition books. We are proud to be a part of the letterpress revival and we hope that you will enjoy and appreciate the wonderful qualities of letterpress printing as much as we do.
